Jazz Jackrabbit DOS Walkthrough 6 - Orbitus

Jazz Jackrabbit was released by Epic MegaGames in 1994. It's a side scrolling shooter game where you take control of a green, Rambo look-alike rabbit named Jazz and try to get to the end of each level while eliminating as many enemies and collecting as many items as possible. The plot involves a rabbit-queen, Eva, being captured by the turtle Devan Shell. It's Jazz's mission to rescue her while avoiding getting himself killed. There are 6 episodes (9 in the full version), each episode is made up of 3 planets and each planet subsequently divided into 2 levels, with the exception of the last planet of each episode which has an additional boss battle. If we do the math here, there are 42 different levels to complete (63 in the full version). Every second level of each planet has a red ruby hidden somewhere. If you find and get this ruby you get to go on a 3D, 3rd-person bonus stage before you move on to the next planet, with the objective of finding the number of blue diamonds specified in the upper left before the timer runs out. If you find all of them, you will be awarded with an extra life. The graphics are by far the best the DOS has to offer and the 3D stages I mentioned earlier were something new and innovative at the time. Sure, today they may not look like much, but this was as early as 1994 and it was a DOS-based machine so just the idea of having 3D environments in a game was mind blowing. The quality of the music is astounding for its time. It was one of the few games at a time to use a sound blaster card to deliver high quality music and sounds. Gamers at that time were amazed to discover audio that consisted of more than some indefinable beeps and bleeps coming out of the PC speaker. The soundtrack itself is one of the most popular there is on the DOS, especially the intro theme. It's so awesome that there have been numerous packs on the internet containing all the songs from the game and it's like CD quality - it sounds GOOD, which at the time was rarely encountered in a game. In the actual game there is a "dashboard" at the bottom of the screen which displays your health, the number of lives left, the amount of time left, the world you're on and also your weapon and how many shots of that weapon you have left. You start off with the regular "blasters" which have infinite shots but you can find upgrades along the way in the form of orbs or floating bubbles which you collect. It's hard to say what the most powerful/effective weapon is; some inflict more damage to certain enemies than others, but what I advise you to do is switch to the one you find more in that level so that I don't run out. Aside from weapons, you can also find : carrots, which replenish your health if you loose any, a caged parrot which will shoot alongside you if you shoot its cage (it will fly away if you get shot or hurt), 2 types of shields : a yellow, one-use one (protects you only once), and an orange, 4-uses one (protects you against 4 hazards), a white star which gives you temporary invincibility, and blue guns which act like a turbo button, allowing you to shoot continuously without releasing the fire button; the more of these you collect, the quicker your gunfire will be; without any of these you have to tap the fire button to fire repeatedly. Before you start a new game you get to choose one of four difficulty settings : easy, medium, hard and turbo. This setting will affect many aspects of the game : how many lives you start off with, how much time you start off with, the overall number of enemies in each level, how many hits an enemy takes before dying and how many hits YOU take before dying. You can die either by losing all your health or if the time runs out (which if you have any common sense will never happen). If you die, you get to continue at the nearest checkpoint that you've shot (a red tick on a yellow background); you'll lose all the weapons and items you've collected and the enemies will respawn, but so will the items, so you get to collect them again. If you lose all your lives you get to try again from the beginning of the level. There's also a save function (also new back then) but the downside is that it won't save your exact position, it will always start you off at the beginning of the level you saved on, and what sucks even more is that you'll lose all your items just like when you die ! The whole point of a save system is if you want to continue exactly from where you left off while keeping your items, which doesn't happen in this game unfortunately.
So these are the basics of the game so sit back and enjoy the walkthrough !
Final verdict : EXCELLENT ! If you decide to go back to the good old DOS, start by playing this game, you'll be glad you did !
