Jeep Grand Commander- the 7-seater Jeep
6,823Jeep unveiled its latest offering for the Chinese market, the Grand Commander, at the Beijing Motor Show. The new Jeep is based on the Yuntu concept, which was showcased at the Shanghai Motor Show in 2017. The 7-seater is a China specific product for now, but may be introduced in other emerging markets as well.
The Jeep Grand Commander features a typical Jeep design language with the signature 7-slat grille along with LED headlamps and fog lamps. The car gets sharp feature lines and squared wheel arches too. The styling makes the Grand Commander an elder sibling to the Compass. The car measures 4873mm in length, 1892mm in width and 1738mm in height along with a wheelbase of 2800mm.
On the inside too, the Grand Commander resembles other Jeep SUV’s with signature cues from the Grand Cherokee and the Compass. A large U-Connect screen featuring Apple Car Play and Android Auto makes for much of the instrument panel. The middle row gets a 60:40 split while the 3rd row gets a 50:50 split. The panoramic sunroof extends down to the 3rd row and that is a touch of luxury.
Powering the Grand Commander is a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine. It is offered in two variants- one producing 234 PS power and 350 NM of torque and another churning out 265 PS of power and 400 NM of torque. The 4×4 system comes as standard, with Sand, Snow and Rock modes. The new 9-speed automatic transmission takes care of delivering the power to the wheels.
The Grand Commander will prove to be the ideal vehicle for the Chinese market that is beginning to open up. As for the Indian market, we reckon the Grand Commander does stand a good chance to rival the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. With the Renegade scheduled to be launched sometime next year, we might even see the Grand Commander later on.
