The classic Doom and Doom II games recently received a major update on Steam, bringing significant enhancements while preserving the original experience. Released in conjunction with QuakeCon 2024, the update integrates both games into a single package, allowing fans to experience 187 mission maps and 43 deathmatch maps from across the series.
Notable features include:
Cross-platform multiplayer support for up to 16 players.
A new 16-level campaign called Legacy of Rust, developed by id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames.
A new 25-level deathmatch map pack.
Enhanced mod support with built-in publishing and browsing features for community-created maps.
4K resolution support, new soundtracks (including Andrew Hulshult's "IDKFA" metal covers), and accessibility improvements like high-contrast mode.
The games now run on Nightdive's KEX Engine, replacing the Unity engine previously used, improving performance and mod compatibility. This update is free for previous owners of Doom or Doom II on Steam
