Jim Carrey Denied 'Twice' For SNL Cast
Lorne Michaels, the legendary creator and producer of Saturday Night Live (SNL), has been responsible for launching the careers of many iconic comedians, but even he has made some surprising missteps. One of the most notable is passing on Jim Carrey—not once, but twice.
In the early 1980s, Jim Carrey auditioned for SNL during a period when the show was undergoing significant changes. Michaels, however, had left the show at that time, and it was Jean Doumanian, Michaels' replacement, who was at the helm. Despite Carrey’s comedic talent, he didn't make the cut. Carrey's energetic, over-the-top style didn't quite fit the tone of SNL at the time, which leaned towards more subdued and satirical humor.
Years later, when Lorne Michaels returned to SNL, Carrey auditioned once again. By then, he had gained a bit more recognition for his work on shows like In Living Color, where his wacky, physical comedy became his trademark. Despite Carrey’s undeniable talent and unique presence, Michaels still decided against casting him as a regular on the show.
Carrey's rejection from SNL didn’t slow him down. Instead, it pushed him to greater heights in Hollywood. His breakout film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in 1994 launched him into superstardom, leading to a string of hit films like The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. Ironically, Carrey would go on to host SNL multiple times, becoming one of the most memorable guest hosts in the show's history.
