The president's daughter has been kidnapped and its up to Jim Power to rescue her; this is the premise for "Jim Power in Mutant Planet", a shoot-em up/platformer originally released for the Amiga and Atari ST back in 1992.

I only ever played a demo of the game on my real Amiga, so this is the first time I'd played this properly.

The first thing that stands out about this game is the truly excellent music by Chris Hülsbeck; perhaps not as iconic as his Turrican 2 score, but still really high quality.

The second thing that you can't fail to notice is how technically accomplished this game is. The graphics are excellent, with big, bold sprites and multiple levels of parallax scrolling all running at the full 50 frames per second that the entry level Amiga 500 was capable of delivering. In fact, this game delivered a platform game experience that was at least equal (from a technical perspective) to both the SNES and Megadrive; the startling thing is that the original Amiga was launched in 1985, whilst the Medadrive and SNES were launched in 1988 and 1990 respectively.

As for the gameplay, it's solid if a tad unremarkable. The controls are very responsive and it has a big play-field for the character to move around in, which means there aren't too many instances of enemies popping from the sides without giving you time to react.

The game is very challenging, most of which is as a result of obstacles, traps and sequences requiring precision jumps and good timing. There aren't many levels, but each is quite lengthy and will require many attempts to master.

All things considered, this was a good, solid shooter with some very high technical production values (apart from that ending screen - yikes!!).

Enjoy!
