James Marshall Hendrix(Jimi Hendrix)(born in Seattle WA as Johnny Allen Hendrix on Nov 27, '42)starting playing guitar@15 years old and in '61 listed in the US Army but discharged after a year.Summer '65 resigned from his position in the "I.B. Specials" which was a touring band for the "Isley Brothers" and joined "Curtis Knight & the Squires", an R & B group that had top 40 hits in NY and NJ.Sept/Oct '65 Hendrix and Knight met producer Ed Chalpin."Chalpin Co." a NY based PPX music industries for recording U.S. cover versions for foreign rec. companies that would overdub and translate the lyrics in different language.Chalpin signed Hendrix, Knight, and the "Squiers".Unfortunately 3 months earlier Hendrix signed a deal with R&B producer Juggy Murray with "Sue Rec."("Tina Turner" and "Baby Washington" under that label)which caused dilemmas later."Knight and the Squiers" wrote(mostly written by Curtis Knight)and recorded songs between Oct '65-Dec '65 hoping to get on the billboards.Singles "How Would You Feel", "Welcome Home", "Hornet's Nest" and "Knock Yourself Out" issued in '66. by RSVP NY label."Hornet's Nest" and "Knock Yourself Out" was JIMMY Hendrix's 1st co-composer credit(no hit).Hendrix split the group moved back to "Greenwich Village" forming his own group(now with stage name)"Jimmy James & The Blue Flames"(featuring Randy California on 2nd guitar later joining "Spirit").Hendrix discovered by "The Animals" bassist Chas Chandler who wanted to be a producer instead and saw market opportunity in the U.K. to get a unique artist/guitarist like Jimmy James to re-do Tim Rose's "Hey Joe".Friend of Hendrix and Chandler Linda Keith, went to "Cafe Wha?" with Chandler, stunned by Jimmy James's performance.Juggy Murray sold Jimi's contract rights to Chandler in July '65.Chandler took Jimi to England and London in Sept '66 to manage and where the "Jimi Hendrix Experience" formed with British guys Mitch Mitchell(drummer)and Noel Redding(bassist).Debut LP "Are You Experienced" released May 12, '67 featuring singles "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", and "The Wind Cries Mary".Chalpin never approached as Jimi climbed to fame.By spring '67 he started the dispute with Jimi and his management for violating "PPX Industries" contract(Jimi also jammed with "Knight and the Squires" in a session that summer causing more issues).Murray and Chandler making $ off of Hendrix while Chalpin was not, even though JIMMY Hendrix was still under "PPX Industries" contract.Chalpin agreed to release '65 and '67 tapes of Hendrix with the "Squires" called "Get That Feeling" in Dec '67 now up against Jimi's 2nd LP with "Reprise" label "Axis:Bold As Love" released Dec 1, '67.Capitol then releases 2nd LP "Flashing" in '68 which features tapes of Jimi(owned by Chalpin who now is making $)with "Curtis Knight & the Squires".Jimi's manager Michael Jeffery, Chas Chandler furious that 2 rec co. making $ on Jimi and not marketing his contribution to some of the recordings correctly.July '68 Chalpin and "Capitol" reach an agreement to release the next LP under the "Jimi Hendrix Experience" after Jimi finishes his LP for "Reprise" "Electric Ladyland"(released Oct 16, '68).Summer/Fall '69 Billy Cox and Buddy Miles decided to step in and help Jimi make an LP for "Capitol" with a new band("Band of Gypsys").4 new songs recorded between Nov 17, 20, and 21, '69 sessions@"Record Plant", NYC,("Ezy Rider"(inspired by Dennis Hopper's July '69 film about 2-star crossed bikers), "Them Changes", "Izabella", and "Burning Desire" for Jimi's next studio LP).Jimi described the new music direction as "Electric Church" or "Sky Church".Jimi thought the 4 shows(2 on "New Year's Eve" and 2 on "New Year's Day")and the LP "Band of Gypsys"(recorded from the 2 shows on "New Year's Day" released 3/25/70)was patchy. On the recordings of these shows you can hear Buddy shouting changes or frustration, see Jimi and Billy nodding heads raising eyebrows during changes on the songs in the footage.Definitely looseness on the performances where we all got lost on parts(including myself)such as "Power Of Soul".I swear I hear Jimi or Billy yell "A"(during key changes)on this version.Jimi was a perfectionist(like myself), even guitar tuning issues and distorted PA systems can be heard at parts on the shows.
