Until the day we get real photo-realistic graphics, realistic graphics are just pointless. There is no chance of you forgetting that you're playing a game, you are always aware you are playing a game so why shouldn't the game look like a game?
Heavy stylized art, retro/8bit/16bit, cel-shaded, and 'anime' style graphics last forever, they age incredibly well. Realistic graphics look like garbage in a few years time once the technology progresses.

Realistic graphics are always going to look like crap once we get closer to them being realistic, this happens constantly as new game engines are created and technology gets better, and the problem of realistic graphics never aging well won't go away until we are at the point where they literally can't get anymore realistic.
