Kid Icarus is a platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Family Computer Disk System in Japan and the Nintendo Entertainment System in Europe and North America. It was released in Japan in December 1986, in Europe in February 1987, and in North America in July. The plot of Kid Icarus revolves around the protagonist Pit's quest for three sacred treasures, which he must equip in order to rescue the Greek-inspired fantasy world of Angel Land and its ruler, the goddess Palutena. The player controls Pit through platform areas while fighting monsters and collecting items. The objective is to reach the end of the levels and find and defeat the boss monsters that guard the three treasures. Before the events of the game, the Earth was ruled by Palutena (Goddess of Light) and Medusa (Goddess of Darkness). Palutena bestowed light on people to make them happy. Medusa hated humans, dried up their cultivation and turned them to stone. Angered by this, Palutena transformed Medusa into a monster and banished her to the underworld. Out of revenge, Medusa conspired with the monsters of the Underworld to take over Palutena's residence, the Palace in the Sky. He launched a surprise attack and stole the three sacred treasures: the Mirror Shield, the Arrows of Light, and the Wings of Pegasus, depriving Palutena's army of their power. After Medusa turned her soldiers to stone, Palutena was defeated in battle and imprisoned deep within the Palace in Heaven. With his last power, he sent a bow and arrow to the young angel Pit. He breaks out of his prison in the underworld and sets out to save Palutena and Angel Land. Throughout the story, Pit retrieves the three sacred treasures from the keepers of the fortress in their respective strongholds in Underworld, Overworld, and Skyworld. He then equips himself with the treasures and storms the sky temple where he defeats Medusa and rescues Palutena. The game has five different endings; depending on the player's performance, Palutena can present Pit with a helmet or transform him into an adult angel. In the Japanese version, the best ending of the English version does not exist, and instead another bad ending is present.
