Killzone 2 Playthrough

The original Killzone had been hyped as a Halo-killer when it was released in 2004. It fell short on that count. While impressive technically, it didn’t do enough to make it stand out from the crowd. Its sequel, released five years later, has some good ideas, but doesn’t do enough to make it unique. Its gritty, dour tone was done better by Gears of War because the developers took the time to develop the characters while advancing the story. Killzone 2, which has a new protagonist in Sev, does the bare minimum, which undercuts a few moments in the second half that could have been interesting.
The gameplay and game design itself are fine. The ability to peek around corners and shoot your enemies is very well done. The levels themselves do a nice job of mixing up the terrains and environments without feeling too repetitive through the 10 missions. It would have been nice to get more enemies, but what we have is adequate. The visuals are solid and the music, when it can be heard over the blaring noise, is good. The voiceovers are bland and forgettable. The main villain, Radec, stands out for his unique voice, and then you have Helghast leader Visari voiced by thespian Brian Cox, who makes everything he says sound great. Cox does a fine job playing the ham in his few scenes.
Killzone 2 is an enjoyable enough romp, but there’s little that makes it special compared to the other FPS games of its day. Worth a look if you’re a Sony-only adherent, but that’s about it.
