Welcome back to Famicom Guide! Today we’re diving into one of the more unusual Famicom titles — King Kong 2: Ikari no Megaton Punch (キングコング2 怒りのメガトンパンチ). Released exclusively for the Famicom on December 18, 1986 by Konami, this quirky game is actually based on the Japanese release of the Hollywood film King Kong Lives (known in Japan as King Kong 2).

Unlike the action-adventure game King Kong 2: Yomigaeru Densetsu (which also came out on the MSX), this Famicom entry plays as a unique action puzzle game. Players control King Kong himself, who must punch through obstacles, defeat enemies, and ultimately rescue Lady Kong from captivity. The game is known for its comedic presentation, bright visuals, and unusual gameplay mechanics, including Kong’s powerful punches that can literally reshape the battlefield.

While Ikari no Megaton Punch never saw an official release outside of Japan, it remains a fascinating piece of Famicom history — showcasing Konami’s experimental side in the mid-80s. Fans of obscure titles will appreciate its place as part of the odd but memorable wave of licensed movie games in Japan.
