If you watched the old playthrough before this one (or tried different paths yourself), you would discover that the merchant's knowledge of Rosella is dependent on whether you show the comb to him or the stag first. Show the comb to the merchant first, then he knows all about it. But if you show the comb to the stag first, then he hasn't a clue.
