This release was created in defiance of the Russian political regime. “State Assignment” is a live album stealthily recorded on a mezzanine in a library at the ZIL Cultural Center in Moscow, on July 11, 2022. In the terminology of state cultural institutions, a “state assignment” is a public event aimed at educating or entertaining the general audience. It can be a lecture, a film screening, a performance or a concert commissioned by the state to be organized in a state venue, or house of culture. The state demands – the institution executes! It is worth noting that such events must be free to attend. Often a performer does not receive a fee for a concert (or receives a very modest one), but they can use the premises of the institution to express themselves and, in fact, perform anything they want – the heads of the institution, or censors, rarely come to see these events.

Taking advantage of the summer relaxation of the ZIL employees, we announced the concert just a week before, presenting a duo of poet and composer Kirill Shirokov and multi-instrumentalist Felix Mirensky. They decided to name the event literally according to its format – "State Assignment". Behind the name, was one of the most unusual performances I was lucky enough to have experienced. Imagine a summer dusk, the library is filled with sparse sounds of turning pages, and creaking on the floor. At that very moment, Kirill Shirokov, between long pauses, in a colorless voice, begins to pronounce words-verses (or words-forms), whilst Felix Mirensky processes his voice digitally, clearing the voice of its artifacts, leaving only those artifacts to resonate in the air. Mirensky explains his method in this way: “In real time, the pitch of the voice is recognized, and the data received is then sent to synthesizers. Words are cut into many granules, and, in a controlled randomized mode, are then played back with various delays, “loops” and “clouds”.

The effect of what is happening is difficult to explain. In absolute silence, Shirokov drops the words, either extremely quietly or extremely loud, so that the work of his mucus can be heard. Pauses, stretched out like a frozen yawn, invite sounds from the outside – the barking of a dog, the groan of the front door, the steps of the literature lovers. Otherwise, we hear emptiness, a rare whisper of Mirensky and the work of his tactile synthesizer. Kirill confronts the listener with the fact of the war: “With an awkward body * panicking music * God begins the operation”... At this moment I circle around the “stage”, creaking with my soles. I now understand that everything Shirokov says is, quite literally, the thoughts in my head right now. A substitution has taken place, and the thoughts sound just as abstract, hidden, unarticulated and natural, but appearing not in my voice. I hear different things: “In awe of everything that's happening, you take off your flaredimijigy half-hose forms”, “It is not time that lasts, but several whole rooms”, "with the help of the soft smells of the nationalities of the railways", “w i t h a l i t t l e b i t o f i n d i v i s i b i l i t y”. Shirokov slows down and speeds up, disappears and reappears. I searched in my memory for the best example of this amazing state, but I could not find it. No, this is not a psychedelic trip. And not a somnambulistic dream. This is music-thought, political poetics, breathing of the subconscious.
