IRVINE, CA — Edited announcement from our friends at Anta Sports: “ANTA will release KT5-‘TCM’ (Traditional Chinese Medicine) colorway on July 11th. As the final reveal of the KT5 series, Klay Thompson will have a real-time interaction with his fans through video chat that day. The TCM colorway features traditional Chinese medicine elements. The story behind its color scheme is inspired by the Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, when Klay suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his left knee, lost the championship, then embarked on a journey of rehabilitation.
On the subsequent annual summer tour to China, with Klay’s anecdote of “holding the Chinese medicine book upside down” when he visited a 400-year-old Chinese medical center in Shanghai during his trip to China last year, Thompson experienced the charm of traditional Chinese medicine by receiving a massage and acupuncture treatment in a traditional Chinese hospital.
The TCM colorway is also named to pay tribute to the dedication and commitment of the medical staff during the epidemic. The Chinese phrase of 妙手回春 (sounds like “Meow Show Hway Chwin”) means, “magic hands to return in the Spring”, to bring the dying back to life by using a miraculous cure. Klay himself also admitted in this interview that his knee had improved a lot through the treatment of Chinese massage and acupuncture.
There are several highlights of ‘TCM’ colorway. The design elements of the pattern on its sock liner and shoe tongue are derived from a traditional Chinese herb Sanqi (Panax Notoginseng). In the classic Chinese medicine book "Compendium of Materia Medica". Sanqi is used to treat bleeding, traumatic injuries (torn ligament), blood stasis and swelling pain. Its Chinese name Sanqi, is also equivalent phonetically to the number three and seven, a tribute to Klay's NBA-record 37 points for a single quarter.
The shoes are comprised of three colors: the emerald green symbolizes the Chinese medicine box, the gold represents the handle of the medicine box, and black. The original graphics, texts and icons of the part of traumatic injuries from the Compendium of Materia Medica covers a large area of the upper, which is made of a special material of DuPont paper.
The outsole of the shoe, mainly in dark green, is printed with vivid characters of the aforementioned Chinese phrase 妙手回春 (“Meow Show Hway Chwin”) and the pattern of Sanqi.
Consumers will also get a custom-made wooden shoe box when they purchase the shoes. The whole product delivers a strong sense of ancient Chinese history and, of course, traditional Chinese medicine.
