How to add the Kubuntu Backports Repository to gain a newer version of the KDE Plasma desktop.

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The interim release of Kubuntu gets the most recent version of Plasma desktop, albeit a couple of weeks or so behind KDE Neon.
The long term support release of Kubuntu gets the LTS Plasma desktop, which is currently at version 5.8.
