Laura Shigihara "Trap" in Mario Paint Composer
482So one night a few weeks back, I was hanging around at one of Laura Shigihara's streams, when she busted out this song that she had written several years ago (I wanna say she wrote it in band? I forgot some of the details). I fell in love with it instantly. I knew that night I was going to (try to) write it in Mario Paint Composer. So I did!
Being that I wrote this by ear off of her playing it once on some random stream, I can imagine that this might not necessarily be how she had envisioned the song upon writing it all those years ago. I only hope I didn't hack it up too badly! I do like the way it sounds here though, so maybe...
Most of my original songs, I write in 6-8 hours. This one took two days. The notes were easy enough since she played it in C, but it was getting them in the right place rhythmically that was hard.
The fourth chord in the verse (the E-G#-B-D) was supposed to come out differently, as in she just barely taps the keys for a second so the chord instantly vanishes rather than reverberates out, which really makes the rhythm of her version pop out in that moment. Normally, you can do that in MPC by placing a low note of the same instrument just afterwards and muting it, so it plays the silent note "over" what just came before it, causing that effect, but for whatever reason, that didn't work on this soundfont and I kinda hate it, but what can ya do? I tried to mute it in Sony Vegas, but the next vocal note comes before that chord even fades out, so you would hear the piano come back out of nowhere and it just didn't really sound right, so no dice on that. Ah well.
You can definitely sense a bit of the PvZ "flavor" in this song, which is probably why I love it so much! Check out Laura's streams sometime, she is a melodious master!
