Law and Order: SVU’s Mariska Hargitay halts production as little girl mistakes star for actual cop and begs for her help
MARISKA Hargitay has taken the detective skills that she learned on Law & Order and applied them to everyday life.
The SVU actress was stopped by a little girl as she was on set filming one of the last episodes of Season 25.
On April 10, Mariska, 60, was on set in New York City when a little girl ran up to her.
Being in her police officer badge, the girl thought she was a real cop.
She did not see the cameras, film crew, or other actors on set, including Ice-T, as she was visibly upset.
The little girl was separated from her mom in the Anne Loftus Playground in Fort Tryon Park, a source told People.
So, she went to Mariska for help.
Being a mother herself, the actress agreed to help and stopped production for 20 minutes to help the mother and daughter find each other.
They eventually did and Mariska consoled them both before returning to work.
Mariska has played Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit since 1999, eventually being promoted to Captain.
MAKING HISTORY
Olivia Benson became the longest-running character on a primetime drama series in January when SVU aired its historic 25th season on NBC.
Mariska spoke with People at the time about the show's run and her character.
“We’ve been on a parallel journey," she said.
"There’s a thing: WWOBD, ‘What would Olivia Benson do?’ The fans would always talk about it, and one day it hit me."
"I also have those moments where I’ve sort of slipped into her. If there’s a crisis, I just take over and lead like that. Being strong and fearless. It’s sort of this perfect feminist story," she ended.
And Mariska was very strong and fearless when she helped the distraught little girl.
She went on to say that she can't believe it's been 25 seasons but then said that she can't see it any other way.
"I can’t imagine the show ending, and can’t imagine not going on this journey with my cast, my crew," Mariska said.
SVU was renewed for a historic 26th Season before 25 even began filming.
FAMILY AFFAIR
Mariska showed how important family is to her when she brought two of her children with her to an important event.
She spoke at a conference for sexual violence for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Mariska gave a speech on behalf of the Joyful Heart Foundation, the company that she founded.
According to NBC.com, the foundation "works on projects and initiatives related to domestic violence, trauma, and sexual assault."
One of Joyful Heart's main components is the End the Backlog campaign, which "identifies and tests the hundreds of thousands of untested rape kits sitting in evidence rooms and labs across America."
After her speech, Mariska and her children - August, 17, and Amaya, 12 - helped her lit up the Empire State Building teal.
