Safe Lawnmower Operation - Injury Prevention - Safety Training Video
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 200,000 people in the U.S. are treated in emergency departments every year for lawnmower-related injuries. About 20,000 of them will be under age 18, and of those, more than 600 will suffer amputations.
In fact, lawn mower accidents are the leading cause of amputations for children under age 10.
No one under the age of 10 should be allowed to operate a lawn mower without close adult supervision. No one under the age of 12 should operate a riding mower.
Never allow your children to ride with you on a riding lawn mower.
Never allow young children to play on the lawn or anywhere nearby when operating a power mower. Rocks and other items can be shot out from the mower and become deadly missiles to a young child.
Always wear safety eyewear and sturdy shoes when operating a power mower. Always stop the mower completely before removing the grass catcher or trying to clear a clog in the mower.
Never refuel a hot mower. Spilled gas on a hot engine can ignite. make sure you have a fire extinguisher nearby when you are refilling a mower's gas tank.
