Lay's Wow chips are maybe one of the worst things that ever happened to snacks containing a fat substitute called Olestra/Olean, which was FDA approved in 1996.

While essentially safe for human consumption, olestra was known to cause severe intestinal distress and diarrhea. These terrible effects became a running joke in the late '90s, and the chips rebranded, eventually eliminating the ingredient entirely.
