Daphne was a nymph in Greek mythology, known for her beauty and independence. She caught the attention of Apollo, the god of the sun and poetry, after he was struck by Eros' arrow, making him desperately love her. However, Daphne had no interest in romance and wished to remain free. As Apollo pursued her, she fled, calling out to her father, the river god Peneus, for help. In response, he transformed her into a laurel tree to protect her from Apollo’s advances. Heartbroken, Apollo declared the laurel sacred and adorned himself with its leaves, ensuring her legacy lived on as a symbol of victory and eternal honour.
