When you are swarmed by 2 or more Commons, there is an interval between when you can actually be damaged. This is can be seen in the console:
z_throttle_hit_interval_easy : 0.5
z_throttle_hit_interval_expert : 1
z_throttle_hit_interval_hard : 0.5
z_throttle_hit_interval_normal : 0.33
which means there is a 1 second interval between hits that deal damage on Expert, 0.5 seconds for Easy/Advanced and 0.33 seconds for Normal.
