"amiibo is a line of near field communication devices available for the Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch systems. They are figures or cards of Nintendo characters, as well as third-party characters that have appeared in Super Smash Bros. games. amiibo are scanned by tapping them on the Wii U GamePad, New Nintendo 3DS touch screen, on the NFC reader/writer for the original Nintendo 3DS, or on the Nintendo Switch right Joy-Con.

amiibo are divided into different series, based on the game or game series that particular figure or card is associated with. The same character can appear in different amiibo series, but functions the same in almost all games.

So far, four different amiibo series contain The Legend of Zelda-related amiibo: the Super Smash Bros. series, The Legend of Zelda series, the Breath of the Wild series, and the Link's Awakening series. By tapping various amiibo into Tears of the Kingdom, Link can receive weapons, materials, or fabric used to change the appearance of his Paraglider."
