This was one of my favorite shooters on the Amiga. To me it was just like an Arcade game.
The C64 is also quite impressive for this machine, but it lacks some game elements. The ST version is not too bad. Scrolling is a little jerky and the game could be faster.
CPC version is a lazy Speccy port. Looks quite fast, but doesn't play like that. It was so bad, that there is a fan made remake of R-type on the CPC. But it's 128k only and won't run on my machine.
PS1 version is Arcade perfect, I think. I just prefer Joysticks instead of the Pads.
