Magnets work due to the attraction of positively charged objects to negatively charged objects. One end of a magnet has a high concentration of electrons (which hold a negative charge), while the other end has few electrons, thereby letting the proton's positive charge take over. If you hold the negative end of a magnet up to a conductor (which is an object that electrons can move freely through) the conductor's electrons will flee from the strong negative charge to the other end of the conductor, leaving a positive charge on that end, thereby making that end attracted to the magnet.
