Let's Play Amnesia: The Dark Descent [Part 21]: Daniel's Repent
Overall:8 - 8.5 / 10
Graphics / Sound: 9/10
+ Atmosphere is done well
+ Good soundtrack, especially monster / shadow tracks
Story: 8.5/10
+ Well-written journey utilizing flashbacks and prose instead of visible scenes
+ Engaging plotline
+ Alexander and Daniel's build into friendship, and then rivalry done especially well
* The motivation for Alexander does not seem as clear, though
* More elaboration on the impact of the endings may have been nice
Gameplay: 7.5/10
* Decent paced mix of action, mystery, and puzzle solving
* Puzzles range from cryptic to intriguing
* I personally did not enjoy the puzzles, but can admit none of them are too hindering to progress; there are only several options to narrow down most of the time
* Seems more exhilarating than horror-esque, though there are several good horror moments
* The "player is own worst enemy" gimmick is the main source of horror, so mileage can vary maybe too much here
Fun Factor: 8/10
* Exploring
+ Story
* Puzzles
* , - Horror aspect
+ Custom content
RATING LEGEND (as of April 7, 2013):
If everything works mechanically, accomplishes what it says / sets out to do: 8/10
Especially done well: +0.5 or +1
Personal like or dislike of content (range): -1, -0.5, 0, +0.5, +1
+ comments denote positive experience
* comments denote neutral experience / subjective flaw that does not prevent completion or enjoyment
* comments do not lower a score
- comments lower the score and denote flaws / mistakes that noticeably hinder progress or experience
Disclaimer: My rating system is based on a process of finding whether the game itself works (programming, story, mechanics, etc); after that, personal gripes or taste can be explored. Even if I consistently like / do not like something, I would rather find a logical backup to why it may be good/bad instead of just giving a high/low score. There is no perfect mix of objective and subjective ratings, so while a number score may be important to some, remember that games are about the experience instead.
