History
Beats of Rage, an open source video game as a tribute to Sega's Streets of Rage 2 that took 9 months to develop.[1][2] The game was then modded and ported to several other systems and gained popularity, with more than a million copies downloaded.[1]
Beats of Rage was first made available for DOS in November 2003.[3] It was not advertised in any way other than by word of mouth, yet it soon gained enormous popularity. The game was downloaded so many times that mirror hosts such as Dreamcast-Scene went down 24 hours after agreeing to host it.[4][5]
As the game was open source, it was instantaneously ported to Sega Dreamcast and PlayStation 2.[6]
Today, the game continues to receive ports as it is available on contemporary systems including Nintendo Wii and PlayStation Portable among several other platforms.
For a homebrew game, Beats of Rage has enjoyed significant main stream presss such as G4.
The game was also featured in printed media such as XboxGamer.

Probably the most important reason for the lasting success of BOR was the game's engine, as it was customization, and allowed for new games to be built with it. The games developed for the Beats of Rage engine are commonly referred to as "mods", the creators are commonly referred to as "modders", and the engine itself is commonly referred to as "modifiable".[9] Beats of Rage has become so popular due to the engine's ability to be completely customization that it has become the watermark for customization engines for video game consoles.
