Lets Play Draugen (p1): What's going on on this island?
Our sister Elizabeth is missing and planned to do some journalistic research in a small Norwegian village galled Graaven. Her brother therefore travels there to find out what happened to her. Along tags Lizzie who is annoying but also a total mystery because who is she, how are we related to her?
An even bigger mystery, however, is the fact that as soon as we arrive, we realise that the entire village is empty and the last thing that happened there was the mysterious death of a little girl. What were the villagers hiding? Where is Elizabeth? And how the hell are we related to Lizzie? Let’s find out!
Draugen was developed by Red Thread Games and is what some people call a “Walking Simulator”. I personally hate that description because it’s not like walking automatically includes theorising heavily about murder, trolls and disappeared sisters.
The other Norwegian folklore game I mentioned is called “Through the Woods”. It’s about a mother who looks for her son who has vanished. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Through_the_Woods
Also, in case you’re interested, this is the scene from The Witches that I am talking about while looking at that one painting far too long. I think it’s still one of the creepiest things to imagine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiC54FkzlHU
So, the Troll painting that we find in Ruth’s room is that of the Sea Troll by Theodor Kittelsen, painted/drawn in 1887. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Theodor_Kittelsen_-_Sj%C3%B8trollet,_1887_(The_Sea_Troll).jpg
Theodor Kittelsen was a Norwegian artist who lived from 1857 till 1914 and who is still incredibly famous for his illustrations of fairy tales and legends, especially trolls. There’s even a book called “Stallo” (which apparently translates to ‘troll’) that mentions him having drawn those creatures because he’s actually seen them (it’s a horror book, so it’s made up but it’s a lovely nod to him). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodor_Kittelsen
There’s also the movie “Troll Hunter” which I mentioned which is absolutely fantastic and very entertaining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLEo7H9tqSM
Also, my favourite trolls are the Nix (Nokken) which lives in lakes and sometimes turns into a beautiful white horse to lure people in. As soon as you touch the horse, I think you get stuck and it drowns you. Good times!
I was and still am also obsessed with the Skogtroll which is so big that people tend to mistake it for a mountain and it has one eye that shines like the moon.
