And so after being shown a glimpse of possible salvation for our fortress we are given another much clearer vision of despair. Perhaps a squad of dwarves with good quality blue armour and weapons would have been a match for most things the game could throw at us at this point once trained but alas we dug to conservatively and too shallow and this is the result.

I suppose that there is no way of properly knowing if it was a large enough vein to fully equip a squad and serve our other potential purposes but still...
