Let's Play Ib: Part 3 - Nightmare of the Mannequin Heads

This is a neat little freeware 16-bit retro rpg horror game, based in an art gallery with you playing as a little girl named Ib. The exhibit quickly becomes strange, however, when you check one painting and realize that there's no one else around. Just, poof, disappeared. Then things begin to happen... strange, unusual, eerie things. And then you find a rose... and all hell breaks loose.
Could someone please explain to me why mannequins are so creepy in video games? Especially when they move of their own accord to a new location while you're not looking? Almost like a scene out of Condemned: Criminal Origins. Sheesh.
What I find even more creepy is the fact that they seem to accumulate around Painted Ladies. Peh; just kidding. The mannequins don't scare me at all; only the things that jump to life and make a sound between a hiss and coughing up cigarette tar really scare me. Although, I do have to admit, having a ceramic disembodied head appear behind you in the mirror is a bit unsettling.
