Let's Play Middara (Part 87) Moar Abraxis
Messed up the previous Abraxis description, thinking it was this one. But now I can go all out.
What is worse than Abraxis, Abraxis you are forced to play. This is the first time Abraxis is part of the main narrative and there no avoiding it.
Some people apparently like this minigame. Those same people also mention having a spreadsheet made for this game. This Abraxis session and the previous one has combinations that cannot avoid damage at all. Those who favor the game say that this is alright and it is just about minimizing damage. So lets minimize this session.
If you roll four shields or four books, you are automatically going to take at least two damage (you need 1x Burst, 6x One Symbol, 2x Other Symbol). It is impossible to have six of one symbol (shield/book) without having at least four of the other. This is due to half the dice favoring shields and the other half favoring books.
Abraxis is five rounds and players have ten health. Each round you have a 1/3 chance to get four of a kind on a black die. So it is possible for everyone to fail no matter the players' input. The skull also does damage but the combination is at least doable.
It is not about the winning/losing in this minigame that I despise. I just hate the whole gameplay loop. You have so little control that it may as well be gambling. If it is meant to be gambling, I would rather just do a skill check and be done with it instead of wasting time.
I have put forth suggestions of adding abilities to the characters themselves to add some variety. The narrative already mentions various gaming quirks they have (Remi likes to set all her dice to their maximum value at the start of a game for example). I also recommended putting in skill checks as there is a significant lack of skill checks in this game (besides jumping and pushing boulders).
