Story 6/10
The story in Night In The Woods is simple enough. You are a girl returning home after failing out of college. After a couple of days of desperately trying to reconnect with your friends/family you start to have nightmares/hallucinations of some celestial being telling you about the end of the world. Eventually you and your friend stumble upon a cult in the middle of the woods that has been sacrificing people to a hole in the ground to make the town more prosperous. There's an incredible story time session and some action and BAM...Everything's normal.
The story just didn't do it for me. Maybe the beauty is that through the most traumatic incidents in life, time still goes on. Maybe it's about the power of real friendships. MAYBE it's about the struggle of mental illnesses. The POINT behind the story is not the problem for me. The pacing of this game was just confusing. It was hours of running back and forth not doing much and then BOOM ACTION EVERYWHERE. So much action that it didn't even make sense. Everything was rushed in the end and it kind of felt like the dev's had nowhere to go so they just cranked it out and left it. Unfortunately for me the game was just boring after a while with an ending that seemed like it tried to hard only to become a bit disappointing in the resolution.
Graphics 8/10
The graphics in the game are awesome! The animations/characters are adorable and at times hilarious. What really impressed me were the set pieces, how the leaves moved as you walked passed, how the trees moved in the wind. Even the color palette's in this game blew me away and made me FEEL the atmosphere. Really, really, beautiful.
Controls
WASD and your classic jumping controls. Nothing to report here!
Audio 8/10
The audio in this game is really, really, impressive. The nightmare scenes are empty in design but they are BOOMING with ambiance. Everything had a sound effect and it all sounded crystal clear. Not to mention all of the background music/band music that was thrown in there. Really solid in the audio department.
TL;DR
NITW starts off with a lot of potential. A lot. However it sputters out pretty quickly. Doing the same thing day by day goes nicely, building the relationships feels great, only for it to all be thrown into absolute CHAOS at the end. The game felt like a drag, an enjoyable one, and then it felt like the dev's realized how little was going on in the game so they threw it all in at the end and tore a big hole in the immersion the game worked so hard to build. The graphics and audio in this game are both remarkable, it is just unfortunate that the story took a nose dive for me at the end.
Would I recommend this game? Yes. While I did not like the ending, I DID miss a lot of things. This is a full game and the playtime alone is worth the price.
