Let's Play Quake Enhanced Edition - Dimension of the Machine (Commentary - PC Gameplay)
Quake was one of the games I played the most growing up, downloading every mod I could find and try them out. Revisiting have always been high on my list, especially to show people that this game still works wonders and is a blast to play.
I started out with Scourge of Armagdon, the first mission pack, as I have played the campaign to death, also very recently in co-op, so I wanted something I hadn't played since it came out.
Quake was recently "enhanced" by Nightdive Studios, which made it playable without having to find source ports and trying to understand the terminology. With it, they enhanced the graphics to enhance, but not change, the look of the game.
With it, they also included the whole package, all mission packages, including a new one created by the creators of the new Wolfenstein series, MachineGames, that really shows just what the upgrade is capable of with intricate architecture and dynamic lighting.
Sadly, they also never really embraced why the longevity of Quake; it's multiplayer. They did enhance it, introduce crossplay, local couch multiplayer, but they never released a dedicated server package in the player's, so the multiplayer will forever be handled in a peer to peer manner, except it's matchmaking functionality.
Which just means that this version won't stick around, so if you want to play this game in multiplayer going forward, the original game is still better. Searching for how to get into Quake multiplayer should grant you plenty of hits.
