There's so many of them, it's hard to choose the best Mario games. Most are universally loved, a few are controversial (hello, Sunshine). But Jack HATES Super Mario Galaxy with a passion - for the story, mind you. Spite is one hell of a motivation and if Jack really doesn't like something, Tifa gets instantly interested. And so we play through Galaxy now!
Every 100 hundred years, the Mushroom Kingdom witnesses a comet come by and thus they celebrate the Star Festival. Tonight's that night and Princess Peach has invited Mario to give him something! Mario makes his way to the castle - when suddenly, Bowser arrives with a bunch of airships and a UFO (UAP if you're nasty) and steals the whole damn thing! Mario ends up meeting the mysterious Rosalina and her adorable, star-shaped friends, the Lumas, and together they pursue Bowser to the very center of the universe.
Super Mario Galaxy was originally released for the Wii and eventually came to the Nintendo Switch as one of the games in Super Mario 3D All-Stars.
The gameplay is basically the next iteration of 3D Mario, with the new gimmicks being the ability to do a special spin, interacting with certain star-shaped objects. Most importantly, a lot of places are small planets with their own gravity. It takes some getting used to, but it's certainly unique.
Some classic power-ups like the Fire Flower make a return, but there's also new things like Bee Mario.
Also going above and beyond is the fully orchestrated soundtrack which is absolutely beautiful and probably one of the best OSTs of any game ever.
What's not so perfect is the controls. They just don't feel smooth. It's hard to explain in words, so try playing the game yourself if you get the chance. The controls work, but it doesn't flow as gracefully yet as in Odyssey, for example.
The camera isn't horrible, but there will be times when you just don't see stuff. When you run around on smaller planets or areas that you explore in 360 degrees, you will occasionally feel like you're fighting the controls and the camera to stay in control.
Super Mario Galaxy also is unique in the sense that it has a much more mature story than probably all other Mario platformers. Throughout the game, you unlock chapters of a story book that Rosalina reads to the Lumas. The art in the book is beautiful and the story is very touching. Without going into too many details: It's not just a happy story.
And then there's the main story of the game, which is standard Mario fare for the first 99%. Bowser does something, Mario goes after him. Been there, done that, never gets old. Until the ending happens. Again, no spoilers, but it can be quite a shock/existential crisis, if you wanna take it that way. It was enough for Jack to get a panic attack when he played it when he first played it...
