That's pretty much how the game starts. Nearly everyone and everything is dead. Or worse. That "Or worse" part gets explained later.

UFO Aftermath is a game that is LIKE X-Com (1994). The goals are the same, save humanity (What's left of it) from the aliens. How the player goes about this is different. Priorities are different, the game also takes up quite a bit more narrative than the original X-Com did.

Also, let's be blunt about this. This game is not as good as the original X-Com. There is less depth to this one. No real base management for starters.

My favorite part of this game though is the player having to find most of the equipment upgrades. Seeing an enemy with a fearsome weapon gives the "Oh no" effect, but also "I could use that..."

There is R&D for equipment in this game, as there should be, but that is more for the later stages of the game. This fits very well into the initial setting of the game too.
