Let's try my luck at Spelunky classic (and a tiny little bit Spelunky 2 at the end)
Long time ago I had tried Spelunky classic. That's after I think I tried Spelunky HD (or once before and once after). So, being used to the fluid controls of Spelunky HD, I had a very bad time with classic. Now it's still awkward but slightly better (maybe I can get used to it but I don't want to, because it messes my brain when playing modern Spelunky again).
There is a slow movement and then much faster acceleration(I push tiny moves on the joypad else I move too far and fall into traps) that makes it harder to aim exactly where I want to jump, fall, or not move further than I was aiming at. This is very crucial in Spelunky because of the instadeaths. You can't just miss your platforming aim and it's fixed on Spelunky HD and 2. Also what made movement in the later installments so much fluid and great. I think also the framerate in classic is 30fps instead of 60, which also makes the movement awkward.
I was surprised to find some things existing in classic Spelunky that didn't in HD but appeared again in Spelunky 2. The bow and arrows, the dice prize room, arrows can stick in walls and used to climb up. Possibly many more I haven't found yet. Sometimes previous installments of game franchises hide some cool stuff that appear later again and it's great to discover the new ideas were originals revamped.
Not sure I'll play again Spelunky classic. I am almost used to the movement now (with some struggle in the controller) but it just messes my brain on the hand eye coordination I am used to from Spelunky HD and 2.
