LevelsAndGear's CRAWMERAX (Almost) Fail-Proof Solo Strategy -- Borderlands

With Borderlands 2 on the horizon, I wanted to clean up my leftovers from Borderlands. One of which was solo killing Crawmerax. After reading/trying the ledge glitch strategies for several hours and failing, I become frustrated -- Which led to the discovery of this strategy.

I did this with a Soldier, though I expect this will work with any class with ammo regeneration available and patience. This strategy takes some time, but assuming you get Craw to glitch properly, this strategy is foolproof and will work every time, and requires no skill or luck.

I had not seen anyone else post a video or write about this method, so here it is.

I AM NOT A BORDERLANDS EXPERT. I play the game, but have not done extensive research on this method, so I cannot speak to the viability of it for other classes or even if other weapons will have the same effect. I also did this on the PC version, I have not tested on a console.

1. Item Preparation: You will need one high damage weapon to hit Craw's weak spots, and a double anarchy submachine gun. The double anarchy SMG is the key to this strategy. I also encourage items to assist with ammo regen. In my video I used a Hunter's Shotgun and a level 48 DA.

2. Start the encounter, and execute the Crawmerax ledge glitch.

If you are not familiar with the Crawmerax Ledge glitch, google/youtube it (You can also see it in my video). But basically, when you first start the Crawmerax encounter, Run to the left along the cliff wall, and one level below the main floor against the first wall you run into, there's a crack. It doesn't work EVERY time, but often when you are in this spot, Crawmerax will glitch into a constant taunt animation. Do not attack Craw until he glitches. You may die a couple of times before this works, don't get frustrated.

3. Use your high damage weapon to take out the 4 claw weak spots (purple orbs) and the eye. You can shoot through the claws and things to hit the purple orbs if they are not visible.

Once all 5 frontal spots are dead Craw should be at 2 letters of health (Cr). The only weak spot left is the one on his back. Most of the strategies involve getting Craw to attack you, and then he will expose his back for you to finish him off. I (and many other people from what I read) have difficulties with this, and there definitely is some luck/randomness involved.

This is where I got frustrated. After first having some success using a Mongol rocket launcher to explode behind him and ricochet of his spines doing damage to the back, this stopped working for me (and required luck, skill, and patience). So, in a fit of frustration I pulled out my favorite weapon, the DA SMG and just started ripping bullets into him for giggles. That's when I noticed a couple of the shots actually hit. Which leads me to:

4. Take out the back spot. To do this, equip your Double Anarchy SMG, aim roughly at Craw's midsection -- and spray and pray. At first, it may seem like nothing is happening, but if you are patient and keep shooting, you will notice the very occasional "Critical" message pop up meaning a bullet has squeaked through and hit. Rinse and repeat. As a soldier, make sure you keep dropping your turret for ammo regen.

Feel free to explore a bit to try to find a spot that works best -- Also mix up full spray with burst fire, you'll eventually find a spot where you should get fairly regular hits. I also encourage zooming if your gun sports a scope. For me, I found aiming slightly to the right and up while zoomed seemed to yield better results.

5. Collect gear. My video has been shortened, but this takes me about 15 minutes with my current weapon set up. A better DA would shorten this I am sure.

I hope this helps people who hadn't been able to solo Craw be able to do so now. Special shout out to the folks who actually do this the proper way without the ledge, much respect to you. 15 years ago I may have had time to do the same thing. Thanks for reading, and enjoy the loot!
