Don't be scared on higher difficulties if the AI researches faster than you. No matter their bonuses, the AIs are not as good at planning out their tech path as you can be. So long as you have a strong empire and adapt to the game, you should be able to do what's necessary to win.

Example: During one Immortal game, I ended up assaulting Wang Kon's island empire with rifles and cannons while he had Protective infantry and tanks. Through a massive production advantage combined with AI idiocy (Wang Kon continued to build spaceship parts and corporate executives), I blew through his tech superiority. He absolutely crushed my navy, but, by the time I did ferry over infantry and artillery reinforcements, he was doomed, and his one-city capitulation gave me the population required to win the game through the United Nations.
