Lincoln-Douglas Debate Site, Knox College VIDEO
Due to windy conditions on October 7, 1858, Knox College had to rearrange a speakers' platform prior to a debate by senate hopefuls Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. When they moved it to another side of Old Main, the only way to access the platform was to crawl from an interior room through a window. Abe made a crack to the effect: "At last I can say I've been through college." 🤣
Completed in 1857, "Old Main" on the Knox College campus is the last Lincoln-Douglas debate site still standing.
