PREVIEW: Where to begin? This fifth Test between England and India, the grand finale of a soul-sapping series from last summer, has been on the waitlist for so long that it's come out of it bearing different captains and coaching staff on both sides. The venue is no longer Manchester either but at least the boards now agree on what this game is: not a one-off Test match but unfinished business.
What hasn't changed though is the many layers there are to this game. No better time to hark back to December of 2011. England were 2-1 up heading into the final Test in Nagpur, where they came across a track so flat that India's four-pronged spin attack was left gasping for breath. It was a dull draw in the end, delivering England to series victory in India after 28 years while the hosts were left wondering what could have been. The ball is in the other court now.
Of course there's much more to this game than the pitch on offer. For starters, it can be the comeback that Indian cricket so needs after the heartbreak in South Africa. Virat Kohli might no longer be the captain of the side but he's been the face of India's ambitions abroad, not in the least in England. If 2014 was about a tour in progressive decline for India, 2018 was often about crucial moments that veered away. The side got most things right in 2021. All they needed was a draw. All they need is a draw.
England couldn't be more delighted about the timing of this. Such was last summer that even Joe Root at his peak wasn't enough to salvage games for them. This is a different year under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, and England are playing a completely different brand of cricket. They have played themselves into a new era inside three Test matches this summer and are looking to push the line for positive play.
But will it be as simple for England against India? If the wait has taught us anything, it's that a lot has changed but a lot also hasn't.
Some good support for India. They will need it at this venue where they have never beaten England in seven attempts dating back to 1967. Interestingly, England can do with some support too, for they have lost their last couple of Tests here to Australia and New Zealand. The pitch here is usually good for batting with some help for the pacers. This season, two out of the four county games here have ended in draws while the other two have resulted in successful run-chases, including a target of 329.
England News: The hosts have named their playing XI, like they have been doing of late under the new leadership group. Ben Foakes misses out and Sam Billings takes his place whereas Jamie Overton makes way for James Anderson.
India News: There's been a bit of upheaval in the Indian camp since the last time they were here. Jasprit Bumrah will lead the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who's been ruled out. There's no Ishant Sharma in the squad and Cheteshwar Pujara is expected to replace the injured KL Rahul at the top, even though Mayank Agarwal has been flown in as cover.
Two days out from the game, head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that R Ashwin, who joined the team late in the UK, is fit and available for selection but India are likely to go with Jadeja and Thakur as the two all-rounders, much like they did in 2021.
