LIVE, WORK AND STUDY IN JAPAN: HOW TO APPLY FOR CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY FOR FAMILY OR SPONSORSHIP
Certificate of Eligibility (COE) is the first material that non-Japanese national get before he/she gets Japanese visa and starts to stay in Japan.
Any foreigner who wants to enter Japan for non-temporary reasons has to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
The Certificate of Eligibility for Japan is a document you have to get before you can apply for a long-term Japan Visa, such as a Work Visa , Student Visa , or Marriage Visa . However, it is the Immigration Services in Japan who issue Certificates of Eligibility, so you need a sponsor or proxy in Japan to handle the application on your behalf.
The purpose of the Japan Certificate of Eligibility is to facilitate the visa application process. It serves as approval from the Japanese Immigration Services that you meet the entry requirements as set by the Japanese government.
The application can be done by a Family member living or working in Japan by sponsoring his/her dependence to bring to Japan and also same goes with an Employer wishes to bring you to Japan for Work or Study. They all end up by getiing the COE (Certificate of Eligibility) as the first process for a successful Japan Visa.
There are 2 kinds of documents: documents to be prepared in Japan (such as application sheet); and documents to be prepared out of Japan by the applicant (such as certificate of graduation of university). Thus, document preparation has to be proceeded under the careful communication between representative / certified agent and the applicant.
After the application documents are accepted by the Immigration Bureau, examination by the Bureau is started. Generally, the examination takes 1 to 3 months.
