42Before the Total War series, before any of the Paradox strategy games, there was this - Imperialism, a game in which you not only take control of the destiny of a whole nation, but then also get to command its armies directly on the battlefield too... albeit in a hex-tiled, turn-based fashion. Sadly, while there was an attempt to do an open-source remake of this, it seems to have stalled about two years ago, so despite the awkwardness of playing at tiny resolutions, the originals are all there is - and they are still very playable, for all that.
(If you're interested, both are available on GOG.com for not a lot of money, though you're probably better off buying the sequel, Imperialism II; the only reason I wasn't playing that instead was that it wouldn't play nicely with OBS.)
