2016 was dubbed the "Year of VR" with consumers welcoming VR into their homes and with the rise of mobile VR, becoming more accessible than ever. But what did 2016 teach us about VR? This talk first takes a brief glance back at what 2016 offered in terms of innovation and hardware in VR before sharing lessons learned from the development community regarding interactivity in VR in areas such as visuals, audio and user input. This talk aims to give developers new to the field of VR, the information and tools required to go forth and create and innovate, pushing the potential of the pioneering field of VR.

Liz Mercuri is an Educational Evangelist at Unity Technologies, where she enjoys educating and inspiring the next generation of game developers. A Women in Games Ambassador and recent Computer Game Software Development graduate herself, she realises the importance of empowering and instilling confidence in developers and promoting diversity in the development community. In 2014, Liz was gratefully awarded a Prince William Scholarship, a partnership between BAFTA & Warner Bros. to study an MSc in Computer Game Software Development at Sheffield Hallam University. In 2016, Liz was featured as one of Develop's 30 Under 30 and attended GDC with Microsoft as part of their Game Changers (Women in Games) Initiative. Liz is also a proud member of BAFTA Crew Games & Warner Bros. Creative Talent. Liz recently spoke at the Career Seminar Day of GDC 2017, where she shared the lessons learned from developing your own software.
