Continuing the horror games week, today I bring you Splatterhouse, beat'n up game released for Arcade and PC Engine.
The story of the game begins when Rick and Jennifer, a couple of parapsychology students, decide to spend a few nights in a haunted mansion called the West Mansion, in order to make a story about the house's past events, such as the disappearance of curious onlookers, weird things seen in the vicinity, and other panic-like bizarre things that caused the mansion to take on the SplatterHouse nickname by residents of nearby villages, who dared not approach the mansion.
After his resurrection by the Terror Mask (which closely resembles Jason Voorhees's mask), Rick makes his way through the mansion, fighting off hordes of creatures in a vain attempt to save his girlfriend Jennifer from a grisly fate. Players of this game will also recognize a number of western horror film influences, such as Friday the 13th and Evil Dead II.
The whole game is made up of dark and scary scenarios, monsters and haunts. And on this mission Rick will feature wood chips, baseball bats, pipes, shotguns, and we use it all to smash the decomposed bodies of the creatures that come our way. But if there's no weapon to pick up, Rick does well in the punch too, throwing powerful punches and kicks at the monsters.
