On January 29, an Iraqi armored column launched an attack on the coastal town of Khafji. At the time, there were only a few Coalition patrols and light security forces in the area. After capturing the town, the Iraqis set up defensive positions. The following day, a mixed force of Saudi and Qatari troops began a counterattack to take back Khafji.
