As the 1st USMC Division pressed forward into the rear areas of the Iraqi Army, resistance began to stiffen. The division was divided into several task forces, each assigned a different objective. Task Force Ripper, consisting of the 1st Battalion/7th Regiment and 3rd Marine Tank Battalion, was to capture the Al Jaber Airbase. Defending the base were the remains of four Iraqi divisions, with armor support from the 5th Tank Brigade.
