As with all big battles, a bit of simple luck here and there can change the outcome of the entire battle, and sometimes just retrying a turn helps to either avoid the luck-dependant situation or just gives Delfador another chance to not mess up. Luckily, the game has plenty of autosaves, so you can go back several turns and just try something else.
