Mafia: Definitive Edition is a 2020 action-adventure game developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games. A remake of the 2002 video game Mafia. Set within the fictional city of Lost Heaven (based on Chicago) during the 1930s, the story follows the rise and fall of taxi driver-turned-mobster Tommy Angelo within the Salieri crime family. As a remake, the game improves on the original's gameplay, remaking the entire setting, enhancing mission dynamics and utilizing a new voice cast.
Conceived as a full remake of the original, Mafia: Definitive Edition was built from the ground up with new assets and an expanded story, although missions and arcs from the original game are carried over. As with the 2002 game, players control Tommy Angelo throughout the game's single-player campaign, and its world is navigated on foot or by vehicle. New to the remake is the introduction of motorcycles, a first in the series. Mafia: Definitive Edition's gameplay mechanics are based on those of Mafia III. A 'Classic Difficulty' setting is also included, serving as the game's hardest difficulty setting that changes some gameplay mechanics such as ammunition management and police response to crimes, bringing the game closer to the original 2002 game.
In 1930, during the ongoing Great Depression, impoverished taxi driver Thomas "Tommy" Angelo is strong-armed by two members of the Salieri crime family - Paulie Lombardo and Sam Trapani - into helping them escape an ambush by the Morello family. Although he is compensated for his help, Tommy loses his job and cab the following day when the Morello family target him in an act of revenge. Asking for Don Ennio Salieri's help, Tommy gets retribution upon his attackers and agrees to join Salieri's organization. He befriends Sam and Paulie after working alongside them in contributing to Salieri's rackets, overseen by his consigliere Frank Colletti. Despite efforts by Morello to take over their businesses, Tommy combats the attempts, earning Salieri's respect
This is an action-adventure game in which players assume the role of a Prohibition-era gangster (Tommy Angelo) rising through the ranks of a crime family. From a third-person perspective, players engage in a variety of crime-related missions: hits/assassinations, shootouts, racketeering, robberies. Players can engage in melee combat using their fists as well as weapons (e.g., bats, pipes, knives) to kill enemies; several missions involve gun battles with realistic firearms (e.g., pistols, rifles, machine guns). Melee attacks and gun fighting result in large splatters of blood, with corpses seen in pools of blood. Finishing moves during melee fights can depict characters smashing enemies' faces, or stabbing enemies in the chest repeatedly. Cutscenes also depict intense acts of violence: a man shot in the head at close range; wounded/restrained men shot to death. During the course of the game, players can engage in a mission set in a brothel; prostitutes are depicted wearing lingerie as they speak suggestively to players (e.g., "...[W]e can do whatever you want.”). Sexual moaning sounds can be heard during one cutscene. The game contains brief references drugs in the dialogue, and one mission depicts a crate full of drug packages.
