To make your own games as an indie game developer you should consider being careful with your backstory and character development. Many new indie developers will over-inflate how descriptive these elements need to be. Unless you have a huge budget and a big team, your aim should be to tighten your story / world / characters / etc rather than ballooning them and being unable to surface that depth to the player.
