This is another instance of odd Japanese mythology, if only because of its peculiarities.
A mischievous ghost known for rearranging pillows as people sleep is called the Makura-gaeshi.
Moving pillows is essentially what they're renowned for, however other stories also claim that they steal souls and sprinkle sand in people's eyes.
While the victim is soundly asleep, stories vary in how far the pillows are moved; some sources assert that they move the pillows all the way to the foot of the bed."
