Mario Kart 64: Trash-Built Racing Wheel!
This was built from scraps and trash. I wanted to see if I could make a racing wheel for the Nintendo 64.
The issue: The original N64 controller uses this wonky analog stick that isn't used in modern controllers. The nice thing about 3rd party N64 controllers is that they may use a potentiometer. So I took a $10 3rd party controller and took it apart, put my own potentiometer in it so I could make a racing wheel out of it.
The Wheel was taken from a broken kids Big Wheel bike. The top half was broken off, and a little sharp, which I made worse when I smacked it so I put some foam on the top sides. Fixed a rotary potentiometer into the lid of a mixed nuts tub and mounted that to a tripod.
A Button and Z Button: Gas and Weapon. I used a touch pad. Took two pieces of foam and put copper tape on either side, separated by insulation strips.
R shoulder Button: Jump I put a micro switch (button) in-between two pieces of cardboard. I used this so I could hear the click when pressing the jump button.
Up and Down were attached by a potentiometer that I had on the ground so I couldn't use it while playing.
Didn't hook any other buttons up. B-Button, Brake serves a function but I had no intention of ever braking.
Most of the time when I'm working on a big project like Mike Tyson's Punch Out or Mario 64 (which will be my next video) I spend a lot of time modifying the controller so it can do whatever I want with it. With Mario 64 I had to deal with the N64 controller for the first time and I wanted to make sure I was making decisions on what I felt would be the best mod for the playing and viewing experience; sometimes this requires me to test out different methods even though I may never use them. If I'm building it, why not show it off?
You like reading don't you? I'd like to make more of these simple builds since there's games that would be fun to play in this fashion without taking all the time that's required in a bigger more produced and polished build. If you have an opinion on this I'd love to hear it in the comments.
Since you're so interested I may as well let you know that I'm thinking of doing a small (trash) build of Goldeneye for the N64. Not sure if I will so I'll let you decide if I should give it an attempt.
Still here? Go comment already, Geez! :)
