Mario Kart DS was released in 2005 and is regarded as one of the best games in the series. It set the style and tone for the future Mario Kart games we know and love.

13 playable characters, including Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Wario, Peach and R.O.B. were available. This was R.O.B.'s only appearance in a Mario Kart game.

16 new and 16 retro tracks were playable. Airship Fortress, DK Pass, Deflino Square, and Luigi's Mansion are a few that stood out.

Mario Kart DS is also the only Mario Kart game to have a dedicated Mission Mode. To date, Mario Kart DS has more single-player content than any game in the series.
